About
Richard is a commercial director, documentary film maker, photographer and founder of Santa Monica-based Curtis Birch, Inc. His visually-driven work explores the extremes of action sports and human storytelling. Richard was a well-known writer in advertising prior to becoming an award-winning director. His PSA for the Life Rolls On Foundation, entitled “Pool”, earned him an Emmy-nomination in the national public service category. Long format credits include a TV episode for the Sundance Film Channel starring Academy Award-nominee Bob Balaban and the 22 minute documentary “Floating:the Nathan Gocke Story,” EP’d by Oscar-nominee Morgan Spurlock. “Floating” won ‘best documentary’ at the New York Short Film Festival and has been been screened as an ‘official selection’ at numerous festivals around the country and the globe. Richard was trained in photography at the Rhode Island School of Design-one of his photos can be seen on the hard cover edition of Kem Nunn’s latest novel–and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University. He is a founder of “They Will Surf Again,” the nation’s first program for disabled surfers. When he’s not directing, or shooting photos, he’s surfing. Directing Honors:
